How to make a small GIF from a 3D model

Three things shrink a GIF the most: a smaller canvas, a shorter loop and a plain background. Start with a square 1:1 canvas and one steady 360-degree turn.

How to do it

  1. Open the MeshShot web app and import your model.
  2. Choose the 1:1 canvas ratio rather than 16:9.
  3. Use a plain or transparent background, since gradients and noise inflate GIFs.
  4. Apply the turntable preset for one clean loop, then export as GIF (Pro).

GIF compresses by repeating areas of colour. A simple background and a single moving object compress well. A busy background or lots of small moving details do not.

Good to know: If the file is still too large, export MP4 or WebM instead. Video is far smaller for the same quality.

Questions

What is the quickest way to get a spinning GIF?

Import the model and apply the turntable preset.

Why does my GIF look grainy?

GIFs use only 256 colours, so smooth shading can band.
