GLB vs FBX

Use GLB to share or show a model on the web. Use FBX when you are moving a model between animation and game tools. GLB is smaller and open, and FBX is proprietary and heavier.

  • Runs in your browser
  • Files never uploaded
  • Free to start

How they differ

  1. Openness: GLB is an open standard from the Khronos Group. FBX is owned by Autodesk.
  2. File: GLB bundles the model, textures and materials in one file. FBX often needs textures supplied separately unless they are embedded.
  3. Best for: GLB for the web, AR and product viewers. FBX for animation and game pipelines.
  4. Size: GLB files are usually lighter and load faster in a browser.

If you only need to show a model, GLB is almost always the better choice. If a teammate needs to keep editing a rigged character in an animation tool, FBX may still be expected.

Good to know: MeshShot imports both. You can import an FBX and download a GLB with Pro.
