Why is my OBJ model grey, and how do I fix it?

The model lost its materials. Select the .obj, the .mtl and every texture image together when you import, and the colours come back.

How to do it

  1. Put the .obj, .mtl and all image files in the same folder.
  2. Open the MeshShot web app.
  3. Select all of those files at once and drop them in.
  4. If it is still grey, open the MTL in a text editor and check the image file names match.

The OBJ file only holds geometry. It points to the MTL for material settings, and the MTL points to image files by name. If any link is broken, the viewer falls back to plain grey.

Good to know: Renamed or moved texture files are the most common cause.

Questions

Can I set colours manually?

Yes. Pick a material finish in the editor.
