What does GLB stand for?

GLB is short for GL Transmission Format Binary. It is the single-file, binary form of glTF, the open 3D format created by the Khronos Group, which also created OpenGL.

What it is used for

  1. Showing 3D products on websites and in apps.
  2. Augmented reality on phones.
  3. Sharing a model as one file with its textures included.

The "GL" refers to the graphics library family the format comes from. glTF was designed to be a compact, quick-loading format for 3D, sometimes described as the JPEG of 3D.

Good to know: The text version of the same format is .gltf, which keeps its textures in separate files.
